The key to keeping vehicles running well tomorrow is routine maintenance today. A recent survey by the Car Care Council found that many car owners forget to perform necessary maintenance:

  • 38% of cars had low or dirty engine oil
  • 54% had low tire pressure
  • 28% had inadequate cooling protection
  • 19% needed new belts
  • 16% had dirty air filters
  • 10% had low or contaminated brake fluid

Leon’s Car Care Center is happy to send you timely service reminders to remind you that it is time for your vehicle’s recommended maintenance. Most manufacturers recommend the following maintenance schedule:

30,000-mile Maintenance:

  • Automatic Transmission Fluid- should be changed every two years, or 24,000 miles
  • Battery and Cables- check that the battery is securely mounted and that connections are clean, tight, and corrosion free. If the battery is three years old or more, it should be tested and replaced if necessary
  • Brakes- check the brake system, including linings, rotors, and drums
Cabin Air Filter- Replace annually, or more often in areas with heavy airborne contamination.
  • Coolant- Flush your coolant reservoir and replace with a new mixture of 50/50 approved antifreeze and distilled water.
  • Engine Air Filter- check and recommend replacement for any leaking, torn, water or oil soaked, dirty and worn filters
  • Fuel Filter- replace filters if restricted or water contaminated. Filters will be replaced at every 30, 000-mile checkup for all cars with fuel injection.
  • Steering and Suspension- check your shock absorbers, struts, and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends, and other related components.
  • Check your tires’ individual rotation speeds when cornering.
  • Spark Plugs- Leon’s will check the wear and condition of all spark plugs. Typically, spark plugs should be replaced every 30 and 90 thousand miles.

60,000-mile Maintenance:

  • Belts- check all V-belts and serpentine belts for looseness and condition, and replace when cracked, frayed, glazed, or showing signs of excessive wear. Not replacing a belt as required could cause breakdown or serious engine damage.
  • Battery and Cables- check that your battery is securely mounted and that connections are clean, tight, and corrosion free. If the battery is three years old or more, it should be tested and replaced if necessary.

Coolant Flush and Maintenance

The cooling system protects against damage by keeping the engine operating within the correct temperature range. More than one-tenth of inspected vehicles had low levels of coolant in the radiator and 16 percent had low coolant levels in their surge tank. One-fifth of the vehicles inspected needed a coolant flush, which is needed to protect the system from rust, dirt, and mineral deposits.

A coolant flush and fill is basic maintenance for your cooling system, and will help ensure maximum performance from your car's heating and cooling systems.
Since the heating system utilizes the same coolant that circulates throughout your engine, performing a coolant flush and fill will also prevent overheating -- the most common cause of breakdowns and internal engine damage.

Check your car's owner's manual to see the recommended interval for changing your antifreeze and flushing your coolant system. New antifreeze will help your car's engine run cooler, and flushing it will remove any dirt, rust, or sediment that may damage the water pump and clog the engine water jacket and radiator.

Transmission Fluid Flushes

Low fluid levels can affect the safe driving performance of the vehicle and damage internal parts if not properly maintained. Close to 30 percent of vehicles fail inspections because of low, overfull, or dirty motor oil. More than 1/4 of vehicles inspected have either low, overfull or burnt transmission fluid. It may be time for a transmission fluid flush.

A transmission fluid flush provides you with the safe removal of varnish and sludge deposits and cleans all internal transmission components, including the transmission cooler, valve body, and torque converter.

This service is also the best way to remove wear metals that are slowly grinding away on your transmission's internal components along with most of the old, contaminated ATF. Your car's transmission is thoroughly cleaned and protected with fresh ATF and conditioners that revitalize the seals and O-rings in the transmission.

If your car's transmission is showing signs of contaminated transmission fluid, slippage, rough or hard shifting, this procedure is the first thing you should try before it becomes necessary to perform major repair work or even replace your transmission. Leon’s Transmission Fluid Flush Includes:

  • Road test for engine performance and transmission operation and shift patterns
  • Flush transmission cooler and cooler lines
  • Flush transmission valve body
  • Flush transmission torque converter
  • Thorough cleaning of all internal parts
  • Flush out all contaminated transmission fluid and replace all the transmission fluid with clean fluid
  • Install transmission additive to revitalize transmission seals and O-rings
  • Top off transmission fluid and road test

Timing Belts

Many of today’s engines use timing belts, but not all. Some engines still use a timing chain and sprocket arrangement. A timing belt is a precision component with teeth that mesh exactly with its mating sprockets. The belt’s teeth are precision molded from a special rubber compound for good mesh and long life.

The timing belt maintains crankshaft-to-camshaft synchronization, keeping valve operation matched to piston position. On some engines, the belt also drives other components. These include the oil pump, water pump, and balance shafts.

Check your car’s owner’s manual for information on timing belt maintenance. Manufacturers generally recommend a certain mileage for belt replacement. If the timing belt is not replaced at the suggested interval, the belt could break, leaving you stranded and possibly causing major engine damage.

If you’re having the timing belt replaced, you may want to consider replacing other parts that may be accessed at the same time. The water pump, timing belt sprockets and tensioning pulleys are good examples. Check with a qualified service technician if you have questions about your car’s needs for timing belt maintenance.
